About

about us

Founded in Washington, DC, Tonic Theater Company produces history and science-based work that makes the most vital subjects of our time feel immediate and human. We run a live R&D lab that transforms research-driven concepts into screen-ready IP — collaborating with historians, scientists, diplomats, and subject-matter experts, testing narratives with audiences, and refining material through iterative workshops. Our programming spans stage productions, documentary film, immersive public forums, and community partnerships. We believe theater should be accessible to everyone and that a well-made story, rigorously researched and honestly told, can change what a room knows about the world.

Our Mission

To create theater that illuminates the past and engages with the present. We collaborate with historians, scientists, and artists to tell stories that matter, stories that challenge assumptions, broaden perspectives, and inspire action.

Our Values

We believe in accessibility as a practice, not a policy. That means filmed productions in educational markets, hybrid and digital programming that reaches beyond the building, and a long-term commitment — through Tonic Grange — to building civic campuses where culture, food, and learning are genuinely available to everyone, regardless of income or location. We believe the laboratory is not only the stage. Our R&D process is collaborative, iterative, and built around the expertise of people who have actually lived the material. We work with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, U.S. Ambassadors, field journalists, scientists, and community members, because the quality of what we make depends entirely on who we make it with.
